What are the legalities?

You will need to complete the Government Form, the "Notice of Intended Marriage'' (NIM) which can be obtained by downloading from www.ag.gov.au/celebrants.  There are instructions that come with this form.

Your signatures need to be witnessed and the hard copy of this form, lodged with me one month and one day before the date of your ceremony.   You and your partner will need to provide your original birth certificates (or original extracts) and in the case of a previous marriage, the original Decree Absolute (proof of divorce) is required.  In the case of the death of a previous spouse, the original death certificate is required.

If we cannot meet, the Notice can be completed, signed and witnessed by another celebrant, JP or similar and posted or faxed to me, together with photo copies of the accompanying documents.  However, I will still need to view all originals before the ceremony can commence.

I will also provide you with a Legal Form, A Statutory Declaration prior to the ceremony itself to confirm that you know of no legal impediment to the marriage.

You must be over 18 years of age (unless special legal permission has been granted).

On your wedding day, you will need two witnesses over the age of 18 who can read and understand English.
